| Computers
are great ……….. aren’t they?
It's true we couldn’t live without them; but
we have to learn how to live with them
|
| Something
like 4 in 5 people suffer discomfort using computers. Chances
are you are one of them. It’s obvious if you think about
it - using a computer is not an activity the body was designed for;
so it can be no surprise that we get pains as a result.
But
you have to use a computer, either because it’s your job or because
you are simply hooked!
How else are you going to find out how to make osso bucco or track down
a bargain on eBay? |
| So
we need a way of using the computer as always without suffering the
predicted aches and pains.
The solution?
- let the computer take the strain! Use WorkPace to help you take regular
breaks and do simple exercises to combat the abnormal activity to which
using a computer is subjecting your body. |
 |
|
The problem
is that we computer users are not good at taking breaks at the right
times. It's an established fact that we generally only take breaks once
significant fatigue or discomfort has developed. And research shows
this is not an effective or efficient way to take breaks - it's
too late, the damage has been done. To be effective, breaks
need to be taken before the onset of fatigue, not in order to recover
from it.
From this
scientific understanding, WorkPace has developed a regime of breaks,
micropauses and exercises to prevent fatigue and performance decrements
associated with computer use. |
| "I'M
TOO BUSY TO TAKE BREAKS - I CAN'T AFFORD THE TIME"
The fact
is that the WorkPace software is customised to your needs and work practices
and it not only protects, it actually enhances productivity.
In
other words, using WorkPace, you will feel better
AND you’ll get more done! |
|
|
WorkPace
is used by close to a million computer users worldwide. It is the leading
software package for RSI prevention and it also ensures compliance with
health and safety regulations.
The software
is already used by many large companies including:

It
couldn’t be simpler and, to help you make the most of the software,
there is a ‘self-guided tutorial’ to guide you through as
you want to know more. |
| "HOW
DOES IT WORK?"
Automatic
reminders tell you it is time for a Micropause and a longer 'rest' break
to combat muscle fatigue and restore concentration. You are prompted
periodically with a selection of 50 different exercises and stretches
specifically designed to reduce muscle fatigue and prevent RSI.
And it doesn’t
just remind you in a fixed pattern. WorkPace’s unique user-customizable
break system detects 'natural' breaks taken by you and resets its timers.
So you only receive breaks when you are working intensely for long periods
without resting now and then. And if you really don’t want to
stop, just tell the software to leave you alone for a while.
You are in total control, it works to suit you, you don’t work
to suit it.
The
important thing is that you can get on with what you are doing knowing
that your computer is looking after you!

A strong
body of evidence now exists supporting the effectiveness of micropauses,
breaks and exercises in reducing pain complaints among computer users.
A number of studies conducted using WorkPace show that breaks
and exercise software has a positive effect on reducing complaints.
These studies, conducted by independent researchers and clients using
WorkPace, also show evidence of productivity improvements and
high user acceptance.
A breaks
and exercise software tool such as WorkPace may be judged 'effective'
if it provides scientifically proven benefits to either the end user
or their employer. The potential benefits promised through the use of
breaks and exercise software can be divided into three areas: |
1. A reduction in the incidence of pain and discomfort complaints
2. A reduction in work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) injury
statistics
3. An increase in productivity

Pilot Studies
of 50 organisations in the USA, Europe and Australasia have been conducted
over the last five years by clients using WorkPace. Collated results
revealed a significant reduction in user discomfort complaints (Fig.
1) and a high level of user satisfaction with the tool (Fig. 2).

of users wanted to continue using WorkPace” |
| IMPROVEMENTS
IN SYMPTOMS AND PRODUCTIVITY – TNO RESEARCH STUDY
The Netherlands
organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) conducted an independent
study on the effectiveness of breaks for computer users using WorkPace.
The study found statistically significant improvements in symptoms and
productivity, measured by an increase in total keystrokes per day (Fig.
3) and an improvement in typing accuracy (Fig. 4) when using WorkPace.

|
| THE
NETHERLANDS ORGANISATION FOR APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (TNO) CONCLUDED:
“When people take more breaks it can be expected that the
productivity of these people will decrease, as their working time is
shorter. However, the results of this study, and comparable results
from other studies suggest this appears to be a misunderstanding. No
negative effects on productivity were found. On the contrary, the number
of keystrokes and the accuracy rates were even higher in the experimental
group than in the control group.” |

An
independent research study published in the American Journal of Industrial
Hygiene studied the before and after effects of using WorkPace among
a sample group of 118 employees at Eli Lilly’s Clinton Laboratories.
The study found: "the number of users in nearly every
category of discomfort decreased after WorkPace was installed".
The changes from using WorkPace are shown in the charts below. For the
users who took part in the study, pain reduced in all categories, including
25% who indicated that their pain had gone completely after using WorkPace.
